Domaine Rietsch Riesling Grand Cru ‘Zotzenberg’
Country: France
Region: Alsace
Grapes: Riesling
Vintage: 2022
The Rietsch family has been making wine in Mittelbergheim, Alsace, since the 17th century. Now run by husband and wife Jean-Pierre and Sophie Rietsch, the approach is natural, with an intense focus on healthy soil, vines and grapes enabling them to produce wines without pesticides, herbicides or sulphur. Over the last 10 years the domaine has become particularly renowned for long maceration orange wines made from traditional Alsace varieties though the direct press whites and Pinot are also exceptional.
Riesling planted over sandstone in the south/south-east facing Grand Cru vineyard, Zotzenberg. Grapes were hand-harvested and whole bunch pressed before undergoing natural fermentation using indigenous yeasts followed by ageing in foudre for 20 months on the lees. Bottled with no filtration or fining. 2022 was one of the hottest years on record, and whilst the wine still boasts Jean-Pierre's signature acidity and light touch, it is bolstered with a brilliant sun-kissed ripeness but with with lovely salinity from the terroir.
