Christian Tschida Felsen II
Country: Austria
Region: Burgenland
Grapes: Syrah
Vintage: 2012
Christian Tschida has 10 hectares of old vines on the banks of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland that have been in his family for 4 generations. He grows mainly indigenous Austrian varieties that benefit from the cool lake air and the sandy gravel, schist and limestone soils the area is known for. Christian is renowned for very light extractions that capture the essence of the grapes, all done without sulphur or other additions.
Felsen II is a beautifully developed older vintage we've managed to get our hands on from Christian. This magnificent Syrah comes from 60 year old vines on chalky limestone on the Western shores of Lake Neusiedlersee. Thanks to the long maceration and a very gentle pressing, this syrah is cool, pretty and light on its feet. However, its the bit of spice and a savoury, smokey finish that awakens the palate and keeps us coming back for more.
