Clos de la Coulée de Serrant
Region: Coulee de Serrant, Loire
Grapes: Chenin Blanc
Coulée de Serrant was planted in the 12th Century by Cistercian monks and has remained in vine ever since; as has the old monastery which still stands today. Today the estate continues to be known for its outstanding wines but is also known for its current custodians - Nicolas Joly - the godfather of biodynamics and his daughter Virginie. Grapes are hand-harvested, with pickers going through the vines several times over the harvest period. Wine is then aged in 500L barrels for a year.
This is a unique, and must try, style of Loire Chenin. Ripe yet dry notes of orange, butterscotch and honey. Deeply mineral wet-stone quality with a bracing acidity. Already brilliant but leave this in the cellar for a few years and watch the complexity grow!
