Black Mountain Col Fondo White
Grapes: Solaris, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir
Black Mountain is the tiny organic wine project of Emma and Mark Smith whose winery is located in a small shed down a narrow country lane in site of the Brecon Beacons. In total they have three hectares of vines planted with a combination of Pinots Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, Solaris and Cab Cortis on shallow clay soils over loamy red sandstone.
Both red and white Col Fondo begin with a base wine from a successful 2018 vintage, held in reserve in two of his three barrels. 2020’s harvest was decimated by early frosts and what little juice was pressed, Mark used sparking a secondary fermentation of those two barrels.
As is the col fondo style, the lees remain in the bottle after the second fermentation which adds richness and leaves the wine lightly cloudy. Elderflower, peach and apricot aromas abound and there's touches of toast and hazelnut. An action packed wine, all at only 11.4% ABV.
