Domaine Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fumé Pur Sang
Country: France
Region: Loire Valley
Vintage: 2023
Forget everything you think you know about everyday Sauvignon Blanc. The late, legendary Didier Dagueneau - the self-styled 'wild man of Pouilly' - turned the wine world on its head by proving that Sauvignon Blanc could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the great wines of Burgundy. Today, his son Louis-Benjamin carries the torch with the exact same manic obsession with quality, farming their Saint-Andelain vineyards biodynamically, hand-harvesting in multiple painstaking passes, and even plowing the soils with horses.
True to its name, this wine feels like a racehorse raring to go. It trades a bit of Silex’s fierce, smoky austerity for a more voluptuous, deeply textured, and expressive style. It bursts from the glass with a gorgeous bouquet of white peach, candied citrus peel, white flowers, and a hint of exotic spice. Thanks to Dagueneau's legendary use of custom, cigar-shaped oak barrels, the palate is immensely silky and rich, yet perfectly balanced by a striking, electric vein of acidity.
