Grapes: Primitivo, Susumaniello
Cristiano Guttarolo’s vineyards are away the plains which often produce hot, flabby wines, on a plateau of limestone some 400 metres above sea level. Daytime temperatures are cooler than usual thanks to a strong breeze from the sea, while the site’s elevation offers a fluctuation between day and night temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and finesse. Vineyard work is organic and done entirely by hand, while in the cellar Cristiano eschews the use of additives entirely.
80% Primitivo from Cristiano's oldest vines, blended with 20% of the rare Susumaniello grape. It was fermented for six days on the skins, before being pressed off to vat to rest until the following spring. Heady with wildflowers, blackberries, blueberries, sun-dried tomato acidity and earthy liquorice notes, it's a rich but refreshing wine with an incredible sense of place.
