Mas des Agrunelles is the project of Stéphanie Ponson and Frédéric Porro in Argelliers and Murles on the Terrasses du Larzac, North-West of Montpellier in Languedoc. Unlike the typical wines of the region, Frederic and Stephanie make delicate and subtle wine with gentle extraction. Rather than focusing on varietals, each of the 12 Mas des Agrunelles cuvees showcases the terroir of individual parcels covering 25 hectares and a range of soil types from fractured Jurassic limestone to red marne. Biodynamic principles are followed down to the bottling on fruit days, and when possible in the descending moon.
Nicot is 60% de-stemmed Syrah and 40% whole-bunch Grenache from a mixed terroir of limestone, loam and clay. The name Nicot comes from a family ancestor of Stéphanie, Jean Nicot, who is believed to have been the first person to bring tobacco to Europe. Yields are restricted to concentrate the fruit, and after a long but gentle maceration, ageing takes place in concrete vats. Bottled without filtering and minimal sulphur. A full-bodied but juicy red with fair tannin and notes of ripe red fruits, garrigue herbs, and figs.
