Montevertine Le Pergole Torte
Country: Italy
Region: Tuscany
Grapes: Sangiovese
Vintage: 2021
Montevertine is an iconic Tuscan estate, and one of the very first 'Super Tuscan' producers after Sergio Manetti and Giulio Gambelli elected to withdraw their wines from the Chianti Consorzio which prohibited 100% Sangiovese wines, and bottle them as simple Vino Da Tavola. Today the 11 hectare estate is run by Sergio's son Martino Manetti, who continues to follow the same approach as his father, working with only Sangiovese grapes, fermenting in concrete without temperature controls, and 24 months ageing in a mix of old Slavonian oak and barriques.
Le Pergole Torte is Montevertine's top cuvée, made only in the best vintages and from the estate's oldest vines planted between 1969 and 1999. About as good as Sangiovese gets; complexity, intensity and balance with a plethora of red fruit, wood, spice and leather aromas. High-toned acidity and fine tannins make it good to go now with a long decant, but will continue to improve for decades.
